Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has revealed why he elected to start Granit Xhaka at centre-back ahead of some younger players (via Arsenal.com).
It was another disappointing match for Arsenal as the Gunners lost their second match in less than a week.
The 2-0 North London Derby defeat felt even worse for Gunners fans despite the weakened team which Unai Emery named.
It was, after all, a Carabao Cup match and after it, Emery revealed why he chose to start Granit Xhaka at centre-back.
“Every player is helping us with big commitments, playing in different positions, because sometimes the team needs them there,” Emery said after the match.
“Laurent Koscielny played on Sunday and after coming back from his injury, starting against Tottenham would have been a lot of minutes on the pitch.
“Granit is helping and I am happy with him and his performance. His commitment to help us is very important.”
It wasn’t the first time Granit Xhaka has played in that position. The Swiss midfielder has performed reasonably well in the last two matches but perhaps a start for youngster Zech Medley would have been better.
