Eden Hazard says he would never reject the chance to captain Chelsea permanently one day.
The Belgian’s future at Stamford Bridge has been up in the air for a long time, with Real Madrid a club constantly linked with signing him.
Blues boss Maurizio Sarri is desperate to tie Hazard down to a new deal as soon as possible, with the 27-year-old key to their success this season and beyond.
When asked by Sky Sports about being Chelsea captain, Hazard replied in typically honest but modest fashion:
Yes, I don’t want to say no of course.
But I think some of the players deserve more to be captain than me.
I mean outside football I always try to give everything for the fans, like in interviews I try to be an example, so if I’m the captain I would be happy.
On the pitch since five years or six years I feel like I’m the leader on the pitch.
I’m the captain of Belgium but I don’t like to talk a lot. On the pitch I hope I show the right way to win.
Hazard will again be pivotal for Chelsea when they visit Wolves on Wednesday night, looking to stay in touch with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
Pep Guardiola’s side beat Watford 2-1 on Tuesday, meaning the Blues are now 10 points adrift of the leaders.
