Former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has revealed he wants to be manager at Old Trafford at some point in the future.
The Serbian made 300 appearances for Man United and, by winning ten major honours, established himself as one of the club’s most successful captains in history.
He retired from the game with immediate effect in 2016 and has not yet assumed any kind of coaching role.
Speaking after the Manchester derby, Vidic noted that he would one day want to take on the responsibility of managing Man United.
“To be honest, in the future I would like to be the manager,” he said.
“I would like to think that I know things. For me to criticise Jose Mourinho, as someone who may be in the future can become the manager, is not fair.”
It may not happen with the next manager, or even with the one after that, but one day, I’m sure, United will have a sobering reappraisal of their managerial recruitment policy and, in keeping with the modern game, move away from the ‘established’ methodology of ‘proven’ managers like Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, and veers towards the new generation of managers coming to the fore.
Pep Guardiola, managing Barcelona at 37, was the first one. Others like Luis Enrique, Roberto Martinez, Mauricio Pochettino and Gareth Southgate have since followed. That is the new model for today’s successful manager: dedicated to fast, slick attacking football, conciliatory with their players, placing emphasis on a blend of positioning and quick passing up the pitch to get the best out of players.
That is certainly not Mourinho. Whether Vidic will adopt this style remains to be seen.
