Manchester United have been handed a major boost in their hopes of landing Gary Cahill from Chelsea.
The Daily Express, as cited on the Metro, reports that Chelsea have told the defender he is free to leave the club during the January transfer window.
Cahill has fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge, finding game time hard to come by under new head coach Maurizio Sarri.
United are one of the many teams to be linked with Chelsea’s club captain, while West Ham, Southampton and Championship duo Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday have also been credited with an interest.
Cahill was recently confirmed as the club captain for the season, which may hint that he could see out the season with the Blues.
He has previously suggested he will be considering his future in January, with Sarri continuing to prefer a partnership of David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger at the back for Chelsea.
