Manchester United face the prospect of losing David de Gea for free at the end of next season, with the Spaniard remaining reluctant to commit his long-term future to Old Trafford, according to the Telegraph‘s James Ducker.
The Spaniard, who nearly joined Real Madrid in 2015, can leave the club for free in the summer of 2020.
Strenuous attempts have been made by the club to strike an agreement with De Gea, regarded by many as the world’s best keeper, for some time, but the Spaniard remains reluctant to commit his long-term future to a club mired in so much chaos and uncertainty at the moment.
And according to Ducker, Man United have offered De Gea a weekly wage of £275,000-a-week – still considerably less than what Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba earn – but find themselves nowhere nearer to reaching an agreement with the keeper.
De Gea clearly feels a connection with the club and has, over the years, kept his side afloat at times when they had no right to be. But having just turned 28, the Spaniard understandably wants to make the most of his prime years by playing for a club competing for the biggest trophies.
United, put simply, do not fit that profile at the moment.
