Jose Mourinho is prepared to dispense with defensive pair Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo in order to finance the signing of a new defender in January, according to the Telegraph‘s James Ducker.
Rojo has not featured at all this season, with injuries reducing him to just five appearances since the turn of the year.
Bailly, on the other hand, begun the season as first choice centre-back but has only made one Premier League appearance since his nightmare display against Brighton and Hove Albion in August.
According to Ducker, Mourinho is willing to let the pair leave in January to make way for the new defender he was denied over the summer transfer window.
The Portuguese’s desire for fresh options at centre-back is well known and Manchester United’s miserable defensive record since August – they have conceded 21 goals in 12 league games, making just one clean sheet all season – has highlighted something truly rotten existing at the core of this team.
Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar and Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld are the two primary options in Mourinho’s eyes. Procuring them in January, a typically difficult time to buy players, feels like a serious long shot.
Either way, you get the sense that the problems with United’s defence would not be solved by merely signing another player.
