Manchester United legend Gary Neville has admitted his former side’s biggest problem at the moment is not chasing Manchester City but trying to get into the top four.
Heading into the November international break Jose Mourinho’s men are in 8th place, 12 points behind Pep Guardiola’s side after losing to them yesterday evening.
The clash against City offered United the opportunity to close the gap to top spot to just six points after a disappointing start to the season but instead let themselves and fans down.
Neville believes people should stop comparing the two Manchester sides for the time being and Mourinho’s side should instead focus on getting into the top four.
The Portuguese boss himself has also previously reiterated this message as he attempts to save his job in dramatic fashion.
Speaking after the match Gary said: “In terms of performance levels. 12 points is about right after 12 games, United’s biggest problem is not Manchester City it’s how they get closer to the rest of the top four and in to that race because City are on a different level all over the pitch.
“And I don’t think United were going to win that game in any other way that what Pep said which was set pieces and on the counter attack.”
12 games into the season the Red Devils have managed to grab 20 points out of a possible 36 so it’s no surprise to see them just below the Europa League spots in the table.
Unfortunately for Jose, just like his predecessor Louis van Gaal found out, losing out of the top four spots is a guaranteed way to lose your job.
For the time being Manchester United appear to be willing to remain patient but he’s quickly running out of time to pick up a good run of form.
