Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has revealed why star man Mesut Ozil started on the bench against AFC Bournemouth (via Arsenal.com).
It was a tough match on Sunday afternoon but the Gunners saw off a competitive AFC Bournemouth team to get the three points.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang grabbed the winner in the 2-1 victory which was marked by the absence of another of Arsenal’s key players.
Mesut Ozil started on the bench for the Gunners and now, head coach Unai Emery has revealed why that was.
“We thought how we can be better in the match today, which is very demanding with the physicality and the intensity, but every player is important,” Emery said after the match.
“[Bringing Ozil on] depended on how the match was going, how it is going in the 90 minutes, and I decided for another option. In the beginning of the season, we were speaking every day about being organised and competitive – and it’s the same today.
“Also today we tried with three centre-backs like we’ve done at some stages this season, and it’s another possibility for us to improve and find our best performance.”
It was a bold decision from Unai Emery but with hindsight, it was probably the correct one. Historically, it’s the sort of fixture which Mesut Ozil has not played particularly well in so leaving him on the bench was the right call.
