Jose Mourinho will most likely adopt a ‘safety-first’ approach and look to play on the break for Manchester United’s trip to Juventus on Wednesday.
Man United were totally outplayed by the Serie A champions at Old Trafford a fortnight ago, losing 1-0, and Mourinho, you suspect, would have picked up a few lessons from the encounter.
Two things which need improving in Turin stick out: the midfield and the speed of counter-attacks.
With that in mind, here is how Mourinho is likely to line up for a massive Champions League clash with the Italian side.
Juventus’ midfield trio easily dominated Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba at Old Trafford, moving the ball faster and boasting a much better shape. Mourinho cannot let the same thing happen in Turin. Ander Herrera, who he praised effusively after the win over AFC Bournemouth, will likely come in as Mourinho seeks to inject more energy into his midfield.
Going forward, the 55-year-old will not revert to using Romelu Lukaku and instead opt for an attacking trio geared towards hitting Juventus quickly on the break. Jesse Lingard, whose bursting runs down the middle Mourinho loves to use in these games, will likely pair up with the in-form Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez, who deserves another chance to play up front.
