Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley is braced for a hostile reception when he faces his former side Everton for the first time this weekend.
The 24-year old joined the Blues from the Toffees last January for around £15million, and his exit left a sour taste in the mouths of the Everton fan base.
Barkley first refused to sign a new long-term contract with Everton, before then pulling out of a £35million switch to Chelsea at the 11th hour, subsequently costing his boyhood club £20million for their troubles.
Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri claimed Barkley had ‘changed his mind’, however he wouldn’t play again for the club before leaving Goodison Park six months later.
And the Everton academy graduate accepted that the reception from fellow Evertonians was unlikely to be positive. Talking to Chelsea TV, as quoted by Click Liverpool, Barkley said:
I don’t think the reception will be the best.
I’m not nervous, I’m excited to play against my former club and teammates – I understand how some of their pay, so that could be an advantage for me.
On the day I might get a few nerves as it will feel a bit strange.I’m looking forward to catching up with some of the staff there who I used to get on really well with.
I was approaching 25 and I felt looking back I could have improved a lot more. At Chelsea I knew I’d improve a lot quicker around better players, world class players.
