Mason Mount has set his sights on the Chelsea first-team squad next season after featuring against his parent side on Wednesday night.
Speaking to ESPN FC after Derby’s dramatic 3-2 defeat in the Carabao Cup, Mount revealed his plans for next season.
Definitely. I want to be here next season. That’s my goal. I want to come back and play for Chelsea, but at this moment I’m at Derby and I’m loving it, so that’s where my focus is.
The player joined Derby on a season-long loan shortly after Frank Lampard and Jody Morris’ appointments were confirmed.
His stock has continued to rise throughout the season, with the English midfielder impressing in the Championship.
Mount has caught the eye of England boss Gareth Southgate, who recently gave him his first senior call-up.
He impressed at Stamford Bridge after being special permission to play against Chelsea. Mount played a perfectly-timed pass to allow Martyn Waghorn to score Derby’s second of the game.
It is yet to be seen if Chelsea will find a place for him at Stamford Bridge next season or look to loan him out again, something that could come down to Derby’s promotion aims this season.
