Ed Woodward remains reluctant to “push the button” on sacking Jose Mourinho at Manchester United but sees Mauricio Pochettino as a potential future appointment should the club’s situation fail to improve, according to reports.
Mourinho has become universally unpopular among supporters following a turbulent summer and poor string of results since August, with Tuesday’s 0-0 draw against Valencia marking a period of four games without a home win.
Zinedine Zidane, who left his post at Real Madrid in the summer, is viewed as the favourite to replace Mourinho at Old Trafford.
But according to the Independent‘s Miguel Delaney, Pochettino is in fact the number one target for senior figures at the club, who believe Zidane would not suit a role which notably differs from his job in Madrid.
However, the chances of pinching Pochettino from Spurs mid-way through the season are virtually non-existent. Both the Argentine and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy have constantly reiterated their commitment to a long-term project in North London as they move into a new stadium. United would have to come up with something pretty special to force a change.
That is why Woodward, at this stage, is reluctant to dispense with Mourinho despite the clearly irreversible situation on the pitch. There are simply no favourable alternatives Woodward feels he can commit to.
