Jose Mourinho believes Anthony Martial‘s developed knowledge of the game serves as the primary reason behind his run of superb form at Manchester United.
The Frenchman did not manage to find the net once in the months which followed the January signing of Alexis Sanchez, prompting widespread speculation that he would leave the club.
But he has recently struck a rich run of form, scoring a memorable brace against Chelsea and capping off a superb performance during Sunday’s 2-1 win over Everton with a well-taken goal.
Speaking after the game, Mourinho noted how Martial, on a technical level, had significantly improved last season.

The main point supporters took away from the win over Everton was that Martial, often so frustratingly peripheral, was showing his glistening, swashbuckling, stylish best with the ball on that left hand side, finding the net and shimmying past players at will. This was the Martial which has fostered the creation of Martial FC, a sort of cult built around his swaggering talent.
For Mourinho, though, this was a performance of grit and discipline. Martial did not just look good against Everton: he defended when he needed to, manipulated the ball nicely in tight areas, displayed good positional awareness, and ran hard for 90 minutes. That is exactly what Mourinho wants to see. And it will mean Martial gets plenty more chances to continue his rich vein of form.
