Manchester United travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday for a game which could have a huge bearing on Jose Mourinho’s future at the club.
That 3-2 victory over Newcastle United before the international break eased talk surrounding Mourinho’s job but a bad performance against Chelsea would ramp up the pressure ahead of games against Juventus and Manchester City.
A win, on the other hand, may well prove to be a watershed moment for this confidence-sapped team. The belief would come rushing back.
With that in mind, here are three players who need to start the game at Stamford Bridge.
Paul Pogba
The Frenchman will ultimately be a decisive factor in this game. Both visits to Stamford Bridge so far have seen him rendered invisible for one reason or another, and United have predictably lost as a result.
If the same thing happens, defeat is guaranteed. But if Mourinho can get Pogba into this game, driving forward with pace and options ahead of him, United may well have a chance.
Fred
With Nemanja Matic injured and looking sluggish in recent weeks, this game feels like the perfect environment for Fred to make his mark.
Chelsea under Maurizio Sarri transition the ball very quickly and press hard in midfield, making it somewhat necessary that United’s midfield uses possession proficiently and matches their opponent’s tempo. That will not happen with Marouane Fellaini or Matic.
While Marcus Rashford, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez all went off on international duty, Martial has stayed behind at Carrington, waiting for this opportunity.
He brought life to that Newcastle game, linking up with teammates and scoring a fantastic goal. Mourinho would be smart to unleash him in similar fashion on Saturday.
