Unai Emery is changing the way Arsenal travel to European away matches after a similar setup for several decades under Arsene Wenger.
A lot has changed at Arsenal in the last few months and it seems as if the club’s travel schedule is not exempt from that rule.
According to ESPN, Unai Emery is making a sweeping change to the way Arsenal travel to and from European away matches.
Under Arsene Wenger, the Gunners would hold their final training session at London Colney before travelling to the away venue. There, they would play the match, stay the night and travel back to London the following day before another light training session at Colney each Friday.
Now, Emery has instructed his players to hold their final training session on the pitch at Qarabag’s Azersun Arena. Arsenal will travel back to London on the same day and are scheduled to arrive at 4:00 am but will be given Friday off.
It’s unclear if this schedule will continue throughout the season or if it is just a one-off for this match in Azerbaijan.
The last time Emery managed a team in the Europa League group stages was Sevilla back in the 2014/15 season. In the six La Liga matches played immediately after their Europa League fixtures, Emery’s Sevilla was unbeaten with a record of four wins and two draws.
It’s an interesting change for the Arsenal players and a similar schedule to the one Pep Guardiola has employed throughout his managerial career. Let’s hope the players enjoy this setup more and it translates to results on the pitch.
