Ryan Giggs has insisted that Manchester United should not sack current manager Jose Mourinho amidst ever-increasing scrutiny of the Portuguese coach.
The Reds have endured their worst ever start to a Premier League season with three losses in only seven games. Only David Moyes’ torrid side equalled such a record, in the 2013/14 season, and the Scot was fired after eight months in charge.
Giggs was part of Moyes’ coaching staff during that period as a player-coach and later went on to be the assistant manager at Man United under Louis van Gaal, having served as interim manager after Moyes’ sacking.
The Welshman, now managing his country, believes Mourinho should be given time despite the bad start to the season.
“I believe he should keep his job,” Giggs said, as per The Mirror.
“They’re going through a tough time but change and you will be in the same position in a year or two years.
“The problem of late has been forward planning. So just take stock, it’s a tough time, but my stance hasn’t changed.”
Giggs is completely right about forward planning. United are run by a group of accountants and bankers with financial interests placed above football interests. There is no desire to win trophies if not winning trophies could bring in the same amount of money for United.
That has led to a lack of long-term thinking on the football side of things. Moyes, van Gaal and Mourinho are not managers of a similar ilk. Signings have been random since Ed Woodward replaced David Gill as the man in charge of transfers at United.
