Rio Ferdinand was delighted with the “desire” shown from Manchester United’s players in an epic 3-2 win against Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
Manager Jose Mourinho was under even more pressure than ever at half-time with his side down 2-0 and him being sacked looked ever more likely. But after a Juan Mata free-kick got Man United back in the game at 2-1, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez scored to complete a sensational comeback for the Reds.
It was a shocking opening 10 minutes from Mourinho’s side as they conceded twice to Newcastle, who had only scored four goals in seven games prior to this match.
Old Trafford was rocking by the end, though, after a comeback reminiscent of the Fergie days. Ferdinand was delighted.
“Great result in the end. They showed character,” Ferdinand said.
“What did we want? A response, attitude, application, desire.”
The former-United captain insisted that the second-half display showed that the United players are behind Mourinho, despite media reports suggesting otherwise.
“There were question marks, would this team fight for this manager? We got our answer. He can get players to play for him.”
It’s a potentially season-defining moment for United. But they have to take advantage of the good feeling following this result. Every player left nothing on the pitch after half-time. It was like watching a different side. And this is the side United fans want to see, one with pride, passion, desire and quality.
