Paul Scholes has insisted that Manchester United will never win the league with Romelu Lukaku as their main striker.
The Belgian forward scored 16 goals in the Premier League last season and has netted four times and eight appearances this campaign.
While his goalscoring record is good, it is not on the same level of figures like Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur and Sergio Aguero of Manchester City.
Scholes believes that Lukaku’s play outside of the box is far from good enough to lead United to another title. The Reds haven’t won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
“I’m just not sure you are ever going to win the league with a goal scorer like him,” Scholes told Andy Mitten for ESPN.
“I don’t think his play outside of the box is good enough.”
The former United midfielder also questioned the workrate of Lukaku, who has been much criticised so far this season for his static performances.
“I’m not sure if he works hard enough but he’s still a young man who has done well and scored a lot of goals,” Scholes continued.
“He’s quick and strong, but Lukaku is one of many United players who look like they’re short of confidence. I don’t think he realises how good he can be, but he needs help because who else can play centre-forward at United now?”
Criticism of Lukaku is just. His finishing thus far this season has been poor as he’s missed five or six key chances that would’ve turned games around for United. Not only that, but his movement has been poor, something Scholes has pointed out on BT Sport on a number of occasions.
However, Lukaku is a great goal scorer. He needs to regain his confidence because he seems like a player who thrives off a good run but struggles to escape a bad run of games.
