England Ladies manager and former-Manchester United player Phil Neville has backed Jose Mourinho as the Old Trafford boss has come under fire in recent weeks.
Mourinho led Man United to one of their worst ever starts to a Premier League season. After losing three of their opening seven fixtures, the Reds came from behind against Newcastle United to escape a run of woeful form.
However, many think that could just be a stay of execution for Mourinho, who went into the game against the Magpies under a cloud of reports suggesting he would be sacked regardless of the result.
Neville, who was once on United’s coaching staff after retiring as a player, lent his support to Mourinho. The Portuguese coach claimed he was a victim of a ‘manhunt’ after the Newcastle game and while he has been derided by many, Neville sympathised.
“I think Jose is still someone that I look up to and admire because managers go through tough times,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“I’ve been sacked twice and it hurts when people level things at you, in defeat or at bad times, it can get personal and maybe some of it has got personal with Jose.”
“I agree with Jose I think there is a bit of a manhunt out there – everyone seems to be looking at him. I think they’ve got the right man who can handle that sort of situation.”
Saturday evening’s game could prove to be a turning point under Mourinho, but there is little confidence from United fans that that will be the case. There have been many potential watershed moments during Mourinho’s time in charge that he, nor the United players, have taken advantage of.
With an international break now, Mourinho must decide on a consistent formation and personnel if United are to have any success this season.
