Manchester United have triggered a one-year extension in goalkeeper David de Gea’s contract to keep him at the club until the end of the 2019/2020 season, according to The Sun’s Neil Custis.
The Spaniard remains yet to sign a new deal at Old Trafford. There is thought to be a contract worth around £275,000-a-week on the table but De Gea has been hesitant to commit his long-term future to Man United.
He signed his current contract back in September 2015 after a botched deadline day move to Real Madrid. However, that deal is coming to an end and there are suggestions that De Gea has concerns regarding United’s ambition.
The Reds have not won one of the two major titles that they compete for – the UEFA Champions League and Premier League – since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. De Gea experienced one title under Ferguson and has since lifted the FA Cup, UEFA Europa League and EFL Cup under the Scot’s successors.
While that would be a good haul for most players at most clubs, it’s not acceptable for United or a star like De Gea. He’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world and it’s only right that he questions whether United will be able to challenge for the elite trophies in the coming years.
If it puts pressure on the board, then it can only be a good thing.
It’s thought De Gea also wants to be paid the same as United’s other key figures. Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez both earn far more than De Gea does currently, and the Spaniard wants his pay rise to take him to the levels of the two outfield players.
