Manchester United are facing a “serious battle” to agree a long-term contract with David de Gea and could therefore see him leave for free in 2020, according to the Telegraph.
De Gea was on the verge of joining Real Madrid on transfer deadline day in 2015, only for the move to fall through following documentation issues.
The 28-year-old is reluctant to commit his long-term future to Old Trafford amid uncertainty surrounding Jose Mourinho’s future and whether Man United, even with a new coach, can compete at the very highest level over the next few years.
According to the Telegraph‘s James Ducker, United officials met with Jorges Mendes, De Gea’s agent, in London last week but arrived at an impasse over any new long-term contract for the Spaniard, who has been voted the club’s best player four times in the last five seasons.
De Gea deserves to be the club’s highest paid player by some distance but the prospect of a bigger financial package might not be enough.
Over five years have elapsed since De Gea won the Premier League title and a player of his quality should be competing for major honours every year. That is just not happening at United, and isn’t likely to happen any time soon. No supporter would blame him for deciding to move on.
