Former-England manager Glenn Hoddle has claimed that Manchester United are “playing with chains on” because of manager Jose Mourinho.
The BT Sport pundit is convinced that Mourinho’s tactics are not inspiring his own players and the Man United squad is therefore underperforming.
It’s been the worst ever start to a Premier League season for United. Mourinho’s men have lost three of their opening seven fixtures in the competition. No other side since the competition began in 1992 has had a worse start to a campaign.
United host Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Saturday, and Hoddle doesn’t expect to see a set of players who are keen to play for their manager.
“United look as though they are playing with chains on,” Hoddle told talkSPORT radio.
“To me, it seems 50 per cent of that group of players are not really chomping on the bit or enjoying their football.
“They’re not doing it for their manager.
“They should be doing it for themselves and the club, and if they like the manager and they do it for the manager as well that’s an added bonus, but I don’t see that at the moment.”
Mourinho has also fallen out with a number of players. Star midfielder Paul Pogba has made a number of controversial and inflammatory comments that have angered the United manager, who removed the vice-captaincy from Pogba a couple of weeks ago.
Hoddle thinks Mourinho has created an unsalvageable situation at United.
“I don’t see him turning it around,” Hoddle conceded.
“United have got to think very deeply how they are going to deal with this. They don’t want to sack him – he’s just signed a new contract!”
