As Liverpool and Manchester City stepped out onto the Anfield turf on Sunday afternoon, both knew that a win would take them clear at the top of the table.
Billed as the thigh-rubber of the weekend, the hype was such that a stalemate ended up surprising nobody in the country.
Quite a shame for the fans inside the ground and for the millions watching around the world as the match played itself out in a manner where even both managers came out ‘happy’ with the result itself.
The truth was, neither deserved to win it, and the match was summed up when Riyad Mahrez skied his penalty kick up into the Centenary stand with minutes left on the clock.
After an explosive start to the game by the home side, the Citizens weathered the storm and gradually slowed the game down to suit their style of play. The result was a match won by two of the strongest defences in the land, winning over against the misfiring front line of both teams.
Liverpool’s front three have yet to pick up where they left off last season, with Mo Salah still looking a shadow of his previously imperious self. How things seem to have changed since that fateful tackle by Sergio Ramos in the Champions League final just five months ago.
In the end, and as is so usual in matches like these, defence prevailed over the attack, meaning the one true winners from the battle at Anfield were none other than Chelsea, who had earlier swept past a lacklustre Southampton side on the south coast.
In fact, it is Chelsea who are emerging as this season’s surprise package. Now sitting equal on 20 points with both Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the table, Maurizio Sarri seems to have brought back a freedom to a style of play that’s being sprinkled out onto the pitch every time the Blues come out of the traps.
The majestic Eden Hazard is drifting around with menace all over the pitch and almost seems capable of scoring even if dropping deep and playing a one-touch pass on the halfway line.
His drive, determination, and artistry on the ball all seem to be a result of another player who has expressed, like Fabregas, that under Sarri, playing football the right way is what matters most.
This, of course, is music to every purists’ ears.
We all know what Manchester City and Liverpool are capable of doing on a football pitch.
Manchester City will pass you to death and wait for that killer through-ball, while Liverpool with blow you off the field with their 15-minute goal blitzes, but there is something new and raw coming out of London that cannot be overlooked. A dynamic footballing team, ready to fight for a title that many predicted would end up going back up north again this year.
We’ve heard it a million times before, but it bears repeating, the international break could not have come at a worse time! With the sumptuous sub-plots and narratives being played out this weekend, we are reminded that these shifts of power are exactly why the Premier League is considered by many as the most wonderful league in the world.
