Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba’s situation at the Camp Nou, according to reports from Spain.
The Spaniard, who has made 257 appearances for Barcelona, attracted interest from Man United even before he completed the move to Catalonia from Valencia.
Jose Mourinho was open to signing a left-back over the summer transfer window but instead decided to place his faith in Luke Shaw – a move which has paid off.
But according to Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo, United have been alerted to Alba’s ongoing contract dispute with Barcelona. The defender’s current deal expires at the end of next season and he is not close to agreeing on fresh terms with the club’s board, whose frugality and occasional insolence at the negotiating table is well known.
United’s hierarchy did not grant Mourinho the central defender he wanted but he did receive a young, promising right-back in Diogo Dalot. On the other side, Shaw’s emergence has felt like a new signing in itself. Put together it has shown supporters a glimpse of life after Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young.
The latter pair are both 33 now and could well be in their last season at the club. Moving for Alba, therefore, would provide Shaw with the perfect support on the left flank throughout a campaign.
