Jose Mourinho could be sacked before Manchester United play Juventus next Tuesday if his side loses badly to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, according to Sky Italy journalist Federico Zancan.
A report from David McDonnell in the Mirror prior to the Newcastle United game suggesting Mourinho would be sacked regardless of the result was dismissed by the club.
Man United’s dramatic late resurgence against Newcastle eased the pressure on Mourinho in the media but did not, in any meaningful way, change the fact that this team is dramatically struggling under the current leadership.
And according to a report by Zancan, although the club is reluctant to make any immediate decisions over Mourinho’s future, a heavy defeat at Stamford Bridge – where United have only won once in the league since 2002 – could spell the end for Mourinho.
The club’s board continues to stick with Mourinho because of the 55-year-old’s record in big games. He oversaw United’s best record against the top six since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement last season – including wins away at Manchester City and Arsenal – and there is still a belief he can maintain that record this season.
However, a monumental defeat to Chelsea, which is far from impossible, could significantly change the feeling at the top.
