Kevin Keegan has backed Jose Mourinho to survive the latest crisis at Manchester United.
The Portuguese manager is under significant pressure at the moment following one of the worst starts ever made to a Premier League season by the Reds.
Mourinho oversaw three losses in Man United’s opening seven fixtures. Saturday evening, though, saw the players, fans and manager come together in a 3-2 fight back win against Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
It’s a lifeline for Mourinho, who had gone into the game with reports indicating he was set to be sacked regardless of the result. Keegan, a former Premier League manager himself who was involved in a couple of title races, believes the experienced United boss can survive.
“It’s easy in life when you’re winning,” Keegan said at the Cheltenham Literary Festival, launching his new book.
“The character comes out when you’re not winning.
“He’s got to handle it and he probably will.”
Mourinho has overcome many challenges in his career. However, too many times a bad period at a club has never been escaped and the inevitable sacking has followed.
The 55-year-old has been sacked twice by Chelsea but also by others. The “Mourinho season syndrome” whereby a team achieves great things before suddenly falling off in the manager’s third campaign in charge has hit United without any of the prior success he’s had at other clubs.
Hopefully he can survive because another manager would mean another couple of years at United of ‘transition’.
