Jamie Carragher has insisted that Anthony Martial must develop greater consistency in his game to be considered level with the Premier League’s best wingers.
Martial was compared to Chelsea’s star man Eden Hazard and Liverpool duo Mo Salah and Sadio Mane on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football ahead of Tottenham Hotspur against Manchester City.
The Frenchman was deemed to be inconsistent by both Carragher and former-Manchester United man Gary Neville.
Martial has netted four goals in his last three Premier League games, but needs to start putting in solid performances every week rather than a couple of amazing displays followed by woeful showings.
“You can’t expect two goals every game, you can’t expect that from any player,” Carragher admitted on Sky.
“When he doesn’t score Martial, what is he actually bringing to the game?
“When Mane doesn’t score, he’s still making those runs in behind.
“When I watch Martial in the last two weeks, he’s been 9/10 or 10/10 but when he doesn’t score he’s a 4/10. There’s not that big impact on the game.”
Neville agreed with his fellow pundit, saying that Martial “is either a five or a nine and what you want is a seven or eight with the odd nine.”
It’s a very valid point from the two pundits. Martial has been superb in recent weeks and was United’s best player against Chelsea, when he scored twice, and against Everton in United’s most recent game as Martial scored once.
However, in between those two fixtures, Martial had a very poor game against Juventus where he constantly lost possession and offered little for the Reds.
Manager Jose Mourinho has sometimes criticised Martial for only playing well when the rest of the team do. Perhaps that’s an issue, too.
