Former Manchester United keeper Peter Schmeichel believes Jose Mourinho can deliver a Premier League title this season.
The 55-year-old came under immense fire following successive defeats to Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur, conceding three goals in each game.
But a comfortable 2-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor, during which United created a host of chances and could have easily scored five, has reduced the pressure on Mourinho.
And Schmeichel, speaking after the game, has insisted the manager still has what it takes to bring the title back to Old Trafford.
“If we give him time and patience and players with him with everybody we can actually focusing on what’s happening which is progression,” he said.
“He is doing good things, yes we strive for more but he is doing positive things. When we give him time and patience and we understand that this is a period where we have to develop where we want to be at a point where we can say now we will win the Premier League, and I think we will get there.”
We are too early in the season to make any sweeping predictions or judgements. Defeats to Brighton and Spurs shed light on a flesh defensive underbelly which provided cause for alarm. Holding firm against a limited and tired Burnley team should not offset those concerns. A trip to Watford, who have maximum points after four games, will provide a sterner aerial test.
That said, United’s last two games have shown a measure of attacking promise not apparent in the first two. They had 44 shots in total against Burnley and Spurs compared to the 22 they managed in games against Leicester City and Brighton. There is progress happening there; the wheels are turning a bit more smoothly.
That is encouragement for Mourinho and United, who have been often criticised for a lack of attacking nous. Criticism will be nowhere near as severe, regardless of results, if they keep that record up.
