Former Bristol City academy player and Chelsea loanee Jacob Maddox has been drawing significant attention from across League Two for his performances at Cheltenham Town.
Maddox, a tricky winger who can also play as attacking midfielder, has earned somewhat of a cult following whilst on loan at Cheltenham Town earning rave reviews from fans despite only playing seven times.
In those seven games Maddox and Cheltenham have been through a lot with the “Robins” losing six in League Two forcing the club to sack manager Gary Johnson.
Despite the turmoil Maddox, who is only 19, has gone from strength to strength with his trickery and pace proving difficult to deal with for most League Two defences.
While Cheltenham’s latest match against Crewe Alexandra was dominated by the arrival of new manager Michael Duff, it was Maddox who stole the show in an otherwise uneventful 0-0 draw at Whaddon Road.
Named Man of the Match, Maddox was very prominent for Cheltenham Town running up and down the left-wing almost like a man possessed.
The youngster, who deputised over most of the corners created several chances with very good deliveries which Cheltenham could not take advantage of.
Talking to one fan at half-time he said: “Maddox has been superb so far at Cheltenham, he’s exciting, quick but just needs to add end product to his game.”
The consensus from fans, pundits and probaly even the player is clear. He has the talent and skill in spades, but needs to be more clinical.
Despite his talent, the Bristol native has failed to score or assist for Cheltenham which is, ultimately, what he was brought to the West Midlands to do. So while it is all well and good praising his performances the youngster is still goalless, but when he opens his account for Cheltenham one thinks it won’t be long before he starts scoring regularly.
Jacob Maddox, who has a Under-19 European Championship Winners Medal with England and UEFA Youth League winners medal with the Blues obviously has talent. So much so that he penned a new deal with Chelsea extending his contract until 2021. Yet at current, despite his success at Cheltenham needs to opens his account
