Pundit reveals why Mourinho wasn't backed in the transfer market

Pundit Jamie Redknapp has revealed why Jose Mourinho was backed by the Manchester United board in the summer transfer market, blaming him for the issues in the centre-back position.

The Portuguese boss was only able to lure in one major signing in Fred while Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant were also brought in to add depth to the squad.

Mourinho had publicly stated his hope for two more signings but was left empty-handed when the transfer window slammed shut.

Redknapp believes the United board had a right to not trust their manager and invest in another centre-back.

The issue became a point of discussion once more after Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof failed to impress in the shock defeat to Brighton.

According to Manchester Evening News, Jamie said to the Daily Mail: “Mourinho may well point to his centre backs’ errors and that he could not buy a defender.

“Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof may have played like youth team players but they are defenders Mourinho spent £60million to bring in.

“That is why the club have been reluctant to back their manager this summer. City and Liverpool go above and beyond whenever Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp want a player but why would United want to waste more money, especially if there could be a new manager next season?”

Jose has been trying to allow the partnership between the two players he invested in develop but they didn’t do enough to impress against Brighton.

It’s still early days and the former Chelsea manager is unlikely to lose his trust in them already but it’s definitely a lost opportunity.

The whole debate about new centre-backs would’ve been put to bed quickly if Bailly and Lindelof started the season in fine form.
