Mourinho hails Man United support as rare and amazing

Jose Mourinho hailed the Manchester United fans as “intelligent” and “amazing” after the club’s dismal 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Monday night.

The Reds were torn apart by Spurs in the second half despite having been the better side in the first 45 minutes.

More individual mistakes followed after Man United had conceded three goals last week as well, away at the Amex to Brighton & Hove Albion.

But despite the terrible showing, United fans were vocal in the final 10 minutes, with consistent chants of “Red Army”, “we’ll never die”, and “forever and ever, we’ll follow the boys.”

“All our fans don’t read papers,” Mourinho said, criticising the media.

“All our fans don’t watch television. All our fans are more intelligent than that.”

“They answer in an absolutely amazing way. I don’t think its normal for a team to lose a game at home and for the supporters to react in the way they did.”

Mourinho’s name was sung at the end of the game despite the bad performance. It seemed he was taken aback, even though he’s not a man who shows his emotion in a particularly obvious way.

The Portuguese has managed at Real Madrid and Chelsea where the fans can be fickle and turn against the manager very quickly.

He stood on the pitch to applaud the fans in the Stretford End, picking up a scarf and a shirt. Mourinho may also have been showing a message to journalists, the board and the fans.

He has often left the pitch immediately without thanking the fans, or just giving them a brief show of gratitude. His applause and words, as well as hailing Luke Shaw on the pitch before he went down the tunnel, is a show of composure and calm during a storm at Old Trafford.
