Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson believes Jose Mourinho does not deserve to be sacked by the club.
The 55-year-old is under enormous pressure after losing two of his opening three Premier League games this season, suffering his heaviest home defeat as manager against Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night.
It was confirmed by the BBC on the morning after the game that Ed Woodward remained in support of Mourinho. Other media outlets have claimed he is one defeat away from losing his job.
Robson, widely regarded as one of the great Man United captains, believes the idea of sacking Mourinho at this point is ludicrous.
“It’s too easy. The minority of fans in clubs will be asking for the manager’s head after a few bad results and it’s often they speak the loudest,” he said.
“The track record that Jose has holds up. After three games, you don’t talk about sacking the manager, you encourage and back him.”
The situation United finds itself can indeed be blamed on Mourinho. At least in part. He has had superb financial backing and three summers to work with this team, to help them evolve and improve, yet evidence suggests they are heading inexorably backwards under the Portuguese.
Strangely enough, though, simply dismissing him would not rid the club of its demons. The post-Fergie era has been hallmarked by underachievement on the pitch, granted, but that only tells a fraction of the story: structurally, from the Glazers to Ed Woodward to the scouting department, the infrastructure underpinning this club has failed to modernise itself over the last five years.
Until that changes, any manager who comes in will find themselves consumed – and ultimately defeated – by the implicit dysfunction keeping this club in an ugly cycle of expensive failure.
