Manchester United star Luke Shaw has admitted that he can be a better player and is gunning for a quick start to the season.
Jose Mourinho’s men get their Premier League campaign going with a clash against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Friday.
Shaw is expected to start the fixture given how Ashley Young has only just returned from his World Cup exploits with England.
It’s the perfect opportunity for the youngster to establish himself as a regular in the starting XI for the first time in quite a while.
Young will have to get some training under his belt first before Mourinho starts to rely on him for the upcoming season.
According to the club’s official website, Luke said: “We all know how important a quick and fast start would be.
“We want three points straight away and you look at our fixtures at the start of the season, we want maximum points and we want to keep getting points during the whole season.
“I feel this season we can do it. I feel this season we are really strong. You’ve got people coming back off the back of good World Cups, the spirits are high, so everyone is looking forward to it and this could be a good season for United.
“We have, I feel, an amazing squad with depth and I think the players will bring quality in their own ways.
“I know I can be better, but the main thing is getting the minutes and I feel I’ve had enough minutes to feel fresh and ready for the game on Friday.”
Shaw has a better shot at making himself a key player for United this season due to the relatively straightforward competition for the left-back spot.
Daley Blind has been sold back to Ajax this summer while Matteo Darmian is expected to eventually leave to an Italian club.
With two less players fighting with Luke for the left-back position, he’ll have far less excuses for not solidifying as the first choice.
As trusted as Ashley is by Jose, he’s still a player at the end of his career rather than at it’s peak.
