Manchester United have been interested in signing a new right winger this summer and Chelsea’s Willian is one of the names on the top of Jose Mourinho’s shortlist.
However, it doesn’t look like the Brazil international will be going anywhere before next week’s deadline after Antonio Conte’s departure prompted the arrival of former Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri.
Willian’s relationship with Conte turned toxic throughout last season and he seemed dead-set on leaving Stamford Bridge back in May, but his new boss Sarri has ended potential suitors’ hopes of landing him anytime soon.
Speaking in his press conference ahead of the FA Community Shield clash against Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday, he insisted: “I spoke yesterday with [Willian] about him being late [to training], not his future.”
“It was a very positive conversation and I am very happy about it. There is no Willian problem. I do [think he’ll stay]. [I’m] very confident.”
There was controversy earlier in the week as a letter asking for permission to leave Chelsea with a forged Willian signature circled the internet, but the 29-year-old was quick to shut down suggestions he’s on his way.
Mourinho is thought to want two more signings at Man United ahead of his third campaign at the helm, but it’s looking like he’ll just have to settle with a new centre-back.
With less than six days of the transfer window to go, time is truly running out for United to strengthen their squad and they’re going to have to look elsewhere for a new attacker.
