Man United great urges club to make two more signings before summer transfer deadline

Ex-Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is enjoying newly-found life in the MLS with DC United but that doesn’t mean he’s stopped thinking about the club at which he grew into the footballing great that he is.

If the 32-year-old was still playing in England he would be starting his campaign this weekend as the Premier League returns for the 2018-19 season.

There’s a big day before that comes around though which falls tomorrow – Transfer Deadline Day – and Man United still have business to do.

United supporters believe the club need to bring in at least one new face before the summer transfer window slams shut at 5pm and Rooney agrees.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, United’s all-time leading goalscorer had his say on the season ahead and what his former club need to do in order to challenge rivals Manchester City for the Premier League title.

“I think it will be difficult [to catch Manchester City] after the season they had last year. They have been playing some great football,” he admitted.

“But I hope someone can catch them – it would be nice, so hopefully Manchester United can. I think maybe another signing or two. I am sure Jose [Mourinho] has been getting the team right.”

United are still expected to get a deal for a centre-back over the line before their opener against Leicester City on Friday, with Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld, Leicester’s Harry Maguire and Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng thought to be on the top of Jose Mourinho’s shortlist.

If things remain how they are though, satisfaction amongst fans will be as low as ever under Mourinho.
