Man United closing in on deal for Premier League defender

Manchester United’s desperate search for a new centre-back this summer could finally be coming to an end as tomorrow’s transfer deadline edges closer.

It has been reported since May that Man United have been in talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a move for Toby Alderweireld after he was seemingly frozen out of Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team plans in the latter stages of the 2017-18 season.

Alderweireld remains the most likely defender to arrive at Old Trafford this week amidst links with Leicester City’s Harry Maguire, Barcelona’s Yerry Mina and Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng.

And now Daily Mirror journalist David Maddock is reporting that United are edging closer to a deal for the 29-year-old and have offered £40m, which they believe should be enough to secure his services.

Maddock adds that there is a suggestion Jose Mourinho doesn’t just want one new centre-half, but in fact two and Mina is very much still on the radar.

It’s also being reliably claimed today that Bayern defender Boateng still wants to move to Manchester, contrary to reports in Germany, so everything is just up in the air.

Time is quickly running out for United and CEO Ed Woodward to bring in the targets that Mourinho craves before the 2018-19 season gets underway on Friday, but as it stands it would seem like Alderweireld could be the most likely arrival.
