Former Manchester United midfielder Lee Sharpe has backed Zinedine Zidane to replace Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford this season.
The 55-year-old has come under enormous pressure following his side’s dismal display against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.
And Zidane, who left Real Madrid after winning a third consecutive Champions League title in May, has been touted by many as an ideal replacement.
Sharpe, speaking on talkSPORT, noted the Frenchman’s success at the Bernabeu would translate to success with Man United.
“I think Zidane would be the ideal candidate,” he said.
“He’s played at the highest level, managed at the highest level and has been successful at both. He’s a big enough name who could cope with the pressure and the questions asked of managing a club of that size so I think he would be ideal.”
There is a lot of appeal to Zidane. Some managers – and people more generally – possess an air of having a “golden touch”, of just somehow bringing the best at something, success just falling on their doorstep.
He also has a fantastic football brain. Perhaps there is a lack of thorough tactical detail to his managerial arsenal as of yet but the way he micromanaged a group of superstars at Madrid was impeccable.
Whether he can undertake the stylistic and ideological overhaul needed at Old Trafford, however, is another question entirely.
