Chris Smalling has emphasised the Manchester United squad’s desire to win the 2018-19 Premier League ahead of Friday night’s opener at Old Trafford.
Man United host Leicester City in the annual season curtain-raiser following the club’s fifth campaign without clinching the top-flight title, but Smalling is wanting to reclaim what has been United’s a record 20 times.
In an exclusive interview with MUTV ahead of the Leicester clash, the 28-year-old revealed his and his team-mates’ desire to defeat the odds and claim title no. 21 this term.
“Yeah I think it has been a long time since we won the league and it would mean more than ever to win that,” he explained. “Everyone is hungry for that, that is the trophy we want.”
United’s city rivals Manchester City walked the 2017-18 Premier League campaign and lifted the trophy after becoming the first team to ever reach 100 points, so it’s no surprise they are heavy favourites going into this season.
Smalling could once again play a pivotal role in Jose Mourinho’s plans this term after the failure to sign a new centre-back over the summer and is expected to start as part of a back three against Leicester.
The 18-19 campaign will be his ninth as a United player and he’s now one of the more experienced members of the squad, so he’ll certainly be a key figure if he plays as much as expected.
