Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has hailed Ashley Young‘s work rate at Manchester United as a key source of inspiration.
The youngster broke into the first team back in 2015 under Louis van Gaal and made 14 appearances, impressing supporters with his diligence at full-back and superb crossing ability.
His fortunes have unfortunately soured in recent times: two unsuccessful loan spells with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds United have led him to Scunthorpe for the new campaign.
Speaking with the Press Association‘s Simon Peach, the Englishman held up Young as an example of the work rate he needs to replicate.
“It’s crazy,” he said. “The consistency he shows and how committed he is to the game is just something that I look at and think ‘that’s what I need to be doing’.”
The story of Borthwick-Jackson was a sad one because, unlike many promising young English defenders, he actually knew how to use the ball. Louis van Gaal, who values ball retention more than anything, recognised this, which is why the kid was trusted to play at Anfield and against Wolfsburg in the Champions League (he was one of the best players on the pitch that night).
Since then, however, Borthwick-Jackson’s career has spiralled. Two miserable loan spell have put a dent in his career but by no means a fatal blow. Perhaps a strong season in League One, which kicks off tomorrow, will mark the start of a resurgence.
