Ander Herrera believes Manchester United were deservedly punished by Tottenham Hotspur for failing to take a number of early chances on Monday night.
Romelu Lukaku missed an open goal in the first half, with Jose Mourinho’s men also coming close from a rebound at a corner and Fred’s curling effort.
They continued to carve out opportunities in the second half – even after Spurs had taken a two goal lead – but never came close to finding the net.
Speaking to the Telegraph soon after the game, Herrera made it clear that Man United will always be punished if they fail to take their chances.
“When you lose 3-0 at home, a team like Manchester United, if you didn’t watch the game, you would think it has been a disaster, but it hasn’t been at all,” he said.
“We did a good 60 or 70 minutes and should have been winning 2-0 at half-time, but we didn’t. If we want to win the next game against Burnley this is the commitment we should have. The basics have been shown. This is the way we have to play if we want to win against Burnley.
“We have quality, a very big squad. We made six changes and for the first 70 minutes, we were good. It’s easy to turn things around.”
For all the ignominy of defeats to Brighton and Spurs, it all could have been so different. Lukaku, yet to find his shooting boots this term, had golden chances to put United ahead at 0-0 in both games.
Every Premier League team knows how differently this team under Mourinho plays when they draw first blood in any game. The way they carry themselves, manage the game, use the ball, defend set-pieces – it’s as if they were a different team altogether to the one which capitulated on Monday night.
United cannot afford that kind of profligacy. Not at this level. But the real challenge – the thing which has to improve under the current leadership – is removing that sense of panic which envelops the entire team once they fall behind in games.
