Three Manchester United players have been included in the initial 100-man shortlist for the 2018 Golden Boy award.
The recipient of the annual award is the player under the age of 21 in a European country’s top tier that sports journalists from 11 different publications believe has been the most impressive during the calendar year.
France Football (France), l’Equipe (France), Bild (Germany), Ta Nea (Greece), De Telegraaf (Netherlands), A Bola (Portugal), Sport Express (Russia), Marca (Spain), Mundo Deportivo (Spain), Blick (Switzerland) and The Times (United Kingdom) are all allowed to nominate five players, giving each a different number of points ranging from one to 10.
This year; academy graduate Angel Gomes, new signing Diogo Dalot and fan favourite Timothy Fosu-Mensah are representing Man United in the list amongst Europe’s most promising stars.
17-year-old Gomes has continued to turn heads in United’s U18 set-up and is considered to be one of the club’s brightest prospects – a view reflected by the fact he’s already made his first-team debut.
Dalot, 19, is a viewed as a bargain at around the £20m United paid for him this summer after breaking into the FC Porto first team and featuring in the 2017-18 Champions League.
Fosu-Mensah was regularly used as a centre-back in the Premier League aged just 20 last season, as he impressed on loan at Crystal Palace.
United players are no strangers to the Golden Boy award, and are in fact the club to have the most winners since the trophy’s introduction in 2003. Anthony Martial picked it up in his debut season at Old Trafford in 2015, after Paul Pogba was the recipient during his Juventus days in 2013 and Wayne Rooney in 2004.
