Promising midfielder Matty Willock leaves Man United to return to Scotland

Manchester United U23 midfielder Matty Willock has returned to the Scottish Premiership this summer, joining St Mirren on a season-long loan.

The 21-year-old has come through the ranks at Man United and played a heavy role in the club’s 2016-17 Premier League 2-winning season, featuring in 21 matches and scoring twice.

At the end of the same campaign, he earned a place on the first-team substitutes bench in the Premier League curtain-closer against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford as Jose Mourinho rested a number of key stars ahead of the Europa League final.

Following his exploits at Man United, he made 11 appearances for Dutch side FC Utrecht in the first half of the 2017-18 season before getting his first taste of Scottish football at St Johnstone in the second half.

After impressing in the 12 games he played, St Johnstone were favourites to get him for a full season this summer, however, their SPL rivals stole the march on them and have now got their man.

St Mirren manager Alan Stubbs had his say on the signing: “He certainly brings a physicality to the midfield. Most importantly, he brings competition for places. He is a big lad, six foot one or two, powerful, aggressive, he will get around the pitch.

“He is a threat in terms of scoring, which is what I want to add to the midfield area, and he certainly gives us a lot of options in there.”

Wllock, speaking to the St Mirren website, sounded confident about his move: “I know what I am coming into. I know the tempo of the game is really quick so hopefully my experience last season stands me in good stead.”

The starlet will hopefully use this opportunity to gain even more first team experience and come back a more developed player.
