Player ratings: Man United poor but youngster continues to dazzle

Lee Grant 6 – Produced an excellent diving save to prevent Mohamed Salah’s header from floating into the net early on but couldn’t do much about Sadio Mane’s penalty.

Matteo Darmian 5 – A largely sluggish performance. Didn’t offer any forward momentum or useful width for United.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah 7 – An impressive display on the right hand side of a back three – an unusual position for him. Held his position well and looked sharp when tracking back.

Eric Bailly 5 – The Ivorian’s subpar pre-season continues: lost track of Salah early on and was saved by his goalkeeper before once again failing to judge a long ball in the lead-up to Liverpool’s second.

Axel Tuanzebe 7 – Without doubt the busiest of Manchester United’s defenders, often chasing after Mane and Salah on his side, and performed with superb composure. Kept his cool and looked strong.

Demetri Mitchell 5 – Brought plenty of energy to the left wing-back role but his handling of the ball wasn’t tidy enough. Gave away a penalty after a moment of clumsiness in the box.

Scott McTominay 4 – Failed to impose himself on the game at all, unable to get to grips with the speed of Liverpool’s play and incapable of building anything going forward.

Ander Herrera 5 – When your most senior midfielder on the pitch offers so little, times are always going to be hard. The Spaniard huffed and puffed as usual but that was pretty much it. No connection with his midfielders or composure in possession.

Andreas Pereira 7 – The jewell of Man United’s pre-season continues to shine brightly. His performance in the No.6 role – before Jose Mourinho’s team ossified in the second half – was once again full of elegance and precision. His sumptuous curling free-kick from 30 yards only reaffirmed the notion that he deserves to start against Leicester City.

Juan Mata 5 – Started reasonably well, picking up the ball in good areas, but faded as the game went on as United’s midfield failed to get going.

Alexis Sanchez 5 – A painfully frustrating afternoon at No.9 for the Chilean, starved of service and physically dominated by Liverpool’s central defenders. Needed more support.

Substitutes

Joel Pereira 4 – A very poor 45 minutes. Lacked presence in the box and conceded three goals – the last of which coming largely as a result of the Portuguese unnecessarily chasing after a player facing away from goal.
