Matteo Darmian has confirmed his intentions to leave Manchester United this summer, even though he’s likely to start the season as first-choice right-back.
Antonio Valencia suffered a calf injury after just seven minutes in Man United’s second pre-season friendly against San Jose Earthquakes last Sunday and is a doubt for the Premier League opener against Leicester City two weeks today.
New £19m signing Diogo Dalot joined from FC Porto to act as back-up for Valencia, but is still recovering from a meniscus tear suffered in April isn’t expected to be available before September.
Darmian has been rumoured to be eager to depart Old Trafford this summer after being limited to just eight Premier League starts throughout the 2018-19 season, and now he has confirmed his desire to move on.
In an interview with ESPN, the 28-year-old revealed: “I don’t think the injury of Antonio is a big injury. I don’t know how long he needs to stay out, but at the moment he is the captain, he’s first choice.
“I want to play more regularly. Last season, I didn’t play much — that’s my objective and my ambition. That’s why I spoke with the manager and also with the club about my future.
“I want to leave but we will see what happens because we don’t know.”
It is believed that Darmian wants to return to Serie A in his homeland Italy, with Juventus and Internazionale his largest suitors and Napoli also known to be interested.
As it stands, no team looks interested in meeting United’s €20m valuation but the full-back should complete a move before August 31 when the international transfer window closes.
