It feels like the Manchester United squad is currently getting thinner by the day on the pre-season tour of the United States and Jose Mourinho could face a problem with the Premier League season starting in under two weeks.
Captain Antonio Valencia will miss the opener against Leicester on Friday 10 August at Old Trafford after tearing his calf against San Jose Earthquakes in Man United’s second friendly, whilst Sergio Romero, Diogo Dalot, Marcos Rojo and Nemanja Matic are also set to be unavailable.
Mourinho has been frustrated by Man United’s lack of movement in the transfer window and still wants a centre-back and right winger to arrive at Old Trafford before the window slams shut in less than two weeks’ time.
The Times report that he has now asked his key stars, who are still on holiday due to their exploits at the 2018 World Cup in Russia this summer, to return early so the club can avoid making a slow start to the season.
Players like Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Ashley Young all featured right until the end of the summer tournament, but the latter is returning to Carrington early this week alongside Marcus Rashford to bolster Mourinho’s options.
Even if the stars like Pogba and Romelu Lukaku were to return now, it’s unlikely they’d be ready for the start of the new campaign anyway but Mourinho is clearly keen to get things fully underway.
