Dele Alli has revealed how former Manchester United striker and current England teammate Danny Welbeck refused to give him his shirt after suffering a 4-0 trouncing at the hands of MK Dons in the League Cup.
Jonny Evans, Anderson, Javier Hernandez, Nick Powell, Shinji Kagawa, Reece James and Saidy Janko were among those in the starting XI.
It was nothing short of a nightmare, with Louis van Gaal unsuccessfully wedging fringe players and youngsters into a three-at-the-back system which was blown away by a rapid, impassioned MK Dons side spearheaded by Alli.
Speaking earlier this week, Alli revealed how he asked Welbeck for his shirt but was refused.
“Me and Danny Welbeck have a joke about it because I asked him for his shirt,” he said.
“We speak about it now. He wouldn’t give it to me. I think he wanted to keep that shirt but he was polite about it. He was really nice. I wasn’t going to give him mine – I just wanted his.”
That turned out to be Welbeck’s last start for the club. He made a depressing substitute appearance in a goalless draw with Burnley a few days later and was off to Arsenal soon after. Kagawa, Chicharito, Janko, Marnick Vermijl and James never played for the first team again. Anderson and Michael Keane only managed one further appearance. The only player from that starting XI still at the club? David de Gea.
Welbeck obviously knew that the MK Dons game would be his last start for his boyhood club. He would have no doubt wanted it to happen under happier circumstances.
