Striker Alvaro Morata has been given a boost over his Chelsea future by boss Maurizio Sarri, after his performance in the Blues’ pre-season fixture against Inter Milan.
Sarri admitted after Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Australia that Morata hadn’t impressed him during the match with Perth Glory, replacing him with Tammy Abraham after an hour.
However, the Spaniard, who has been rumoured with a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer, seemed to catch the eye of new manager Sarri in Nice on Saturday.
Talking to Sky Sports after Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with the Italian side, where they eventually ran out 5-4 winners on penalties, Sarri was quick to praise Morata’s performance, reassuring the forward over his Blues future.
I’m still waiting for the best Morata. In the first match [against Perth Glory] Morata did not play very well, in Australia.
But tonight, especially in the first 30 minutes, he improved a lot. I am satisfied and I am very confident in him for the future.
Morata managed to find the back of the net 11 times in 31 appearances in his first full season in the Premier League, after moving from Real Madrid for a fee worth around £60 million.
