Jose Mourinho has been brutally honest by admitting that Alexis Sanchez’ unhappiness in Manchester United’s pre-season defeat to Liverpool was justified.
Man United were beaten 4-1 by Jurgen Klopp’s side in the International Champions Cup and Andreas Pereira‘s stunning first-half free-kick to equalise was one of a limited number of positives at ‘The Big House’ in Michigan.
Mourinho has had plenty of negative things to say about United’s pre-season, in which they haven’t won one of their four friendlies so far, with his main problem being the number of key players absent due to the 2018 World Cup.
Stars like Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard will all return to the club in August after their extended holidays but one major star who had his first summer off in almost a decade is Alexis Sanchez.
He’s looked incredibly bright in pre-season so far, playing as a sole striker, but was frustrated with the lack of service he received against Liverpool and Mourinho doesn’t blame him if he’s unhappy.
Speaking to the media after full-time, he explained: “Look, do you want him to be very happy with the players he has around him? We are here just to survive and to have some not very ugly results. Alexis is the only striker we have. And the poor man is there trying his best.”
Alexis is set to start the 2018-19 season as United’s main forward, with Juan Mata supporting him up front, but Marcus Rashford is set to be making an early return from his holidays over the coming days to provide the Chile international with much needed support.
