Young opens up about the atmosphere in the England squad

Manchester United star Ashley Young has praised the atmosphere within the England camp, claiming it’s unbelievable.

The veteran was deservedly selected after an impressive season but his inclusion has divided fans with some believing he hasn’t got what it takes to play at a World Cup level.

Young’s ability to reinvent himself from a winger into a left-back has seen him reignite his career, so much so that he’s one of Jose Mourinho’s most trusted lieutenants.

The Englishman is his nation’s oldest player in a youthful squad that will be heading to Russia and he’s joined by his teammates Phil Jones, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford.

The Three Lions were once reported to be a team full of players who can’t see past club rivalries but the former Watford man insists things couldn’t be more different nowadays.

According to talkSPORT, Ashley said: “I would say it [squad atmosphere] is different. I think a lot has been said about staying in cliques and teams staying in teams, but I’ve not seen that at all here.

“Everyone gets on with everyone, and there is not a bad person in the squad. Everybody wants the end result, and everyone wants to go and win. In training we have a few five-a-side games, and everyone wants to win.

“But that’s just the way it is and if you’ve got that in training, that hunger and that desire to win, and you can take that into a big tournament like the World Cup it can only set you in good stead.

“Everybody was a fan. Everyone has got the buzz of gong to a World Cup and the togetherness that is here in the squad is unbelievable.”

Young will likely be competing with Tottenham’s Danny Rose for the left-back spot but based on current form he should just about edge it in order to be selected to start for England.

The younger left-back has had an injury plagued season for his side while the versatile player has been featuring in the Red Devils’ most important games.
