Eden Hazard told Romelu Lukaku to step up his game and stop hiding at half time of Belgium’s 3-0 win over Panama on Monday.
Roberto Martinez’s team were frustrated in the first 45 minutes, unable to build momentum going forward or create chances.
But the second half was a different story: Dries Mertens scored a wonder-goal and then Lukaku killed the game with a couple of well taken goals.
Speaking after the game, Hazard, who supplied the assist for Lukaku’s second, revealed how he told the striker to be more proactive at the break.
“I told Romelu at half time that we needed him,” he said. “He was hiding away on his own up front in the first half.”
“Once he got involved in the game, as if by magic, he scored two goals. I hope he will understand.”
Belgium sank into a slump in the first half against Panama, unsure how to penetrate their low block and bring players into the game. Lukaku’s inability to get on the ball left Belgium looking blunt edged.
The second half, on the other hand, was a different story, and a hallmark of Lukaku’s importance to this team. He started to pull Panama defenders into areas they didn’t like, making incisive runs rather than typical ones. Eventually, the pressure on Panama’s defence bore fruit, with Lukaku opening his World Cup account in style.
